The band's original name was The Farriss Brothers, after three of the founding members—Tim, Andrew, and Jon Farriss. They changed it to INXS in 1979, inspired by a mix of IXL (a brand of jam) and the English band XTC. The name INXS was chosen to reflect their desire for their music to be "in excess," both in terms of sound and impact.
